Get a taste of the life in today’s Khula Village

Using a mode of transport that is vital in Africa, WOWZULU offers you a chance to explore Khula Village from the comfort of a bright yellow bicycle.

These particular bicycles are common in the Zululand area as part of a ‘treepreneur’ project which is operated by our partners in Khula Village, the Wildlands Conservation Trust. These bicycles are exchanged for indigenous tree samplings grown at individual homesteads with local community members.

In partnership with various local tourism entrepreneurs, Khula Village can be explored with one of our experienced local guides on foot or by bicycle. There are 3 routes that you can take, a 5 km route, a 7.5 km route where you can plant a tree in the reclamation area of the wetland and Dukuduku Forest or a 10 km route which also includes the Butterfly Dome.

The tour starts at our WOWZULU market place at the Simunye Tourism Information Centre and is guided by a local storyteller.

Visitors will be welcomed at an imbizo, or meeting, with our storytellers who will discuss the day’s plan. You are given the chance to enjoy our marketplace, which features a coffee shop and exquisitely designed local hand-selected crafts, or share in the stories of Zulu culture with our storytellers.

Once assigned a guide, you will then start the tour of Khula Village.

The first stop, almost next door, is the Veyane Cultural Village where visitors have an opportunity to explore and experience a traditional homestead and gain an insight into Zulu traditions. Visitors then collect their bicycles and set off along a dust road to the next stop for shisa nyama, an informal braai (BBQ) or lunch. The route then takes you deeper into the community where you can meet a Wildlands Entrepreneur and purchase a tree before continuing your exploration of the village. On your route you can plant the tree giving you the chance to assist Wildlands Conservation Trust in their rehabilitation project by planting your tree in the designated area. On weekdays, and by stepping across the road, you may be able to visit the local crèche and meet the children of Khula. Your route takes you past schools, churches, communal cattle dips and taverns. You are regaled with tales of the village and its historic significance as well as getting the chance to get to know the people of Khula Village as you walk, talk, and cycle through their community. The last stage ends, entirely fittingly, at the Gugulamandlovu Tavern, a local pub near the market place, where a trip which combines exercise with exploration can be savoured over a well-earned beer.

Plan Your Getaway

Wear comfortable shoes, shorts/trousers are probably easiest to cycle in and layer up on sunscreen.
You should also wear a hat.
Bring some cash to re-hydrate en route (water, cold drinks and beer available).
We will provide the bicycle, guide, planting equipment and a bottle of water to water the tree, and a second one for you.

Please note you are cycling on soft sand and while it is not a strenuous activity some level of fitness is required (or you can just ask your guide more questions and he will stop more often).

Note: Tours start between 8:30 and 3:00, no tours after 3:00
